Description
When my children were young, we would take the train up to Chicago for the weekend just before Christmas. There was something about walking down Michigan Avenue, all the lights and the people shopping that just set the mood for the holidays. Near the end of the " Magnificent Mile" walk was the Water Tower...all lite up, its golden limestone construction juxtaposed to the steel and glass of its neighbors. Then just across the side street was one of our favorite restaurants for a quick bite. To top it off it seemed that more times than not there would be a dusting of snow... perfect!
The Chicago Water Tower is located at 806 North Michigan Avenue along the Magnificent Mile shopping district in the Near North Side community area of Chicago, Illinois. The tower was constructed to house a large water pump, intended to draw water from Lake Michigan. Built in 1869, it is the second-oldest water tower in the United States, after the Louisville Water Tower in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Chicago Water Tower now serves as a Chicago Office of Tourism art gallery known as the City Gallery in the Historic Water Tower. It features the work of local photographers and artists, and filmmakers. The tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Original artwork is pastel on a prepared hardboard panel.
