Lincoln's Cat And Mary Todd's Almond Cake
Artist
David Hinds
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Wood Panel
Description
A whimsical painting of Lincoln at the table with one of his many cats and a slice of Mary Todds almond cake.
Showing how much stock Lincoln placed in his cats is reflected by the time he once fed Tabby at the table during a formal White House dinner. This communal dining was a common practice when he was eating without guests, but something that was quite unorthodox for a society event. After his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, who referred to his love of felines as his “hobby” later chastised him for his “shameful” behavior, Lincoln is said to have responded:
“If the gold fork was good enough for former President James Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby.”
